Establishment of Land Administration Framework in Port Loko District

The Sierra Leone Land Administration Project (SLLAP) has partnered with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Country Planning, the National Land Commission, the National Council of Paramount Chiefs, and various civil society organizations to establish essential land management structures in Port Loko District.

This initiative includes the formation of Land Tribunals, Village Area Land Committees, Chiefdom Land Committees, and a District Grievance Redress Committee aimed at creating a more efficient and accessible land administration system.

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Specialist, Saiku Bah, emphasized the importance of data collection for village profiles and the memberships of land committees and tribunals.

Participants were introduced to the KoboCollect mobile digital data collection system, which will facilitate the gathering of critical information in a streamlined manner.

“The establishment of these committees is a vital move towards ensuring that our land administration is fair, transparent, and responsive to the needs of our communities,” stated the M&E Specialist. “With the use of modern technology like KoboCollect, we are not only modernizing our data collection process but also making it easier for local communities to engage in land management.”

The formation of the District Grievance Redress Committee was led by the social and gender specialist, Kadiatu Dumbuya, highlighting the project’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable land access. This committee will serve as a platform for addressing disputes and grievances emanating from the land reform process, ensuring that community voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process.

This event in Port Loko follows similar successful initiatives held in the districts of Kenema, Bo, and Bonthe just last week, demonstrating SLLAP’s commitment to a nationwide improvement of land administration frameworks.

The next event is set to take place in Bombali District on Wednesday, continuing the momentum for reform across the region.
