Deputy Mayor of Port Loko City Joins Falaba Section Orientation as Float Parade and Radio Discussion Amplify Land Rights Awareness

The pre‑sensitization orientation for land committees in Bekeh Loko Chiefdom continued on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, drawing enthusiastic participants from Falaba Section. The session recorded a notable highlight: the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Port Loko City, who also serves as a female member of a land committee. Her active participation and salient contributions during the discussions brought added prominence to the ongoing exercise.

The Deputy Mayor joined other committee members in engaging with facilitators from the Sierra Leone Land Administration Project (SLLAP), the National Land Commission (NLC), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Her insights, particularly on women’s land rights and community mobilization, enriched the dialogue and underscored the importance of inclusive leadership in land governance.

Float Parade Sweeps Through Four Sections

Following the indoor orientation, the sensitization moved to the streets with a vibrant float parade that traversed major roads across the four targeted sections in Bekeh Loko Chiefdom – Sanda, Kondato, Falaba, and Sendugu. A convoy of vehicles equipped with loudspeakers and megaphones, accompanied by motorbike riders, snaked through busy market areas, parks, and roundabouts. Sensitization fliers were widely distributed to passersby and traders.

A striking feature of the float was the female District Commissioner of the NLC, who mounted one of the lead vehicles and made live announcements directly to crowds, explaining the purpose of the land mapping, recording, and registration exercise and encouraging community cooperation.

Radio Discussion at Radio Bankasoka

The day’s activities culminated in a live radio discussion program at Radio Bankasoka, where the NLC Commissioner General, Abu Bakarr Sappay Foray-Musa, addressed the people of Port Loko District. He elaborated on the mandate of the National Land Commission and the significance of the ongoing mapping, recording, and registration of land rights. The Commissioner General called on citizens to embrace the process as a path to tenure security, reduced land disputes, and sustainable development.

Orientation Concludes Thursday with Sendugu Section

The four‑day pre‑sensitization mission in Bekeh Loko Chiefdom is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, 21 May 2026, with the orientation of land committee members from Sendugu Section. The completion of Sendugu will mark the end of the current phase, after which field teams are expected to begin the actual land mapping and registration activities in the targeted communities.

The exercise follows similar successful missions in Maforki chiefdoms and forms part of SLLAP’s broader strategy to strengthen local land governance, promote environmental safeguards, and ensure that women’s rights and grievance redress mechanisms are fully integrated into Sierra Leone’s land reform process.
